Frequently Asked Questions
We understand you may have questions before joining the registry. Here are answers to the most common ones.
About the Investigation
What is a class action lawsuit?
A class action is a legal proceeding where a group of people with the same complaint against a company join together to sue as one. Instead of thousands of individuals each filing their own case, one lawsuit represents everyone. This makes it possible for ordinary consumers to take on large corporations that would be too expensive or intimidating to fight alone.
Who is behind this investigation?
We are an independent Canadian consumer watchdog initiative. We are not a law firm, a financial institution, or affiliated with Bree (TryBree.com) in any way. Our sole purpose is to aggregate evidence of potentially illegal lending practices and connect affected Canadians with licensed class-action attorneys.
Is this an official lawsuit yet?
Not yet. We are currently in the investigation and evidence-gathering phase. The registry exists to document the scope of the problem and demonstrate a systemic pattern of abuse. Once we have enough evidence, the case will be handed to a licensed Canadian law firm to evaluate and formally file in court. Registrants will be notified immediately when that happens.
Why does this registry exist if there is no lawsuit yet?
Law firms evaluate whether to take on a class action based on the number of affected people and the strength of the evidence. A registry with thousands of documented complaints, financial impact data, and consistent patterns of abuse is exactly what attorneys need to determine viability. Without this evidence, individual complaints get ignored.
Eligibility & Registration
Am I eligible to join the registry?
If you are a Canadian resident who has used the Bree (TryBree.com) cash advance app and experienced any of the following, you are likely eligible:
- Being charged fees, tips, or subscriptions that made the true cost of borrowing extremely high
- Being declined for cash advances after paying the monthly subscription
- Being pressured into paying "express" fees or tips to receive your advance
- Experiencing unauthorized or early withdrawal attempts that caused NSF fees
- Being unable to cancel your account or remove your banking information
- Being advertised a high borrowing limit but offered a much smaller amount
Does it cost anything to join?
No. Joining the registry is completely free. If and when a law firm takes on the case, they work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win compensation for the class. You will never be asked to pay anything out of pocket.
What information do I need to provide?
The registry form asks for:
- Which issues you experienced (checkboxes)
- A brief description of your experience in your own words
- Approximate amounts borrowed and dates (if you remember)
- Your name, email, and province (for legal contact purposes)
You do not need bank statements, screenshots, or any documents to register. Just describe what happened to you.
I no longer use Bree. Can I still join?
Yes. If you used Bree at any point and were affected by their practices, you are encouraged to register regardless of whether you are still an active user.
Privacy & Data Security
Who will see my information?

Where is my data stored?
All data is encrypted and stored on secure servers located in Iceland, a jurisdiction with some of the strongest privacy and freedom of speech protections in the world. This ensures your information is shielded from unwarranted corporate interference.
Can I delete my data after registering?
Yes. Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), you have the right to withdraw at any time. Contact us at contact@breeclassaction.org and we will permanently delete all your records within 72 hours. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
What Happens Next
What happens after I register?
Here is the process:
- Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation email acknowledging your registration.
- Evidence aggregation: Your experience is combined with thousands of others to document the pattern of abuse.
- Legal evaluation: The aggregated evidence is shared with licensed Canadian class-action attorneys.
- Filing: If the attorneys determine the case is viable, they formally file the class action in court.
- Notification: You will be contacted directly by email with updates and next steps.
How long will this take?
Class action investigations and lawsuits are thorough processes. The investigation phase depends on the volume of registrants and the strength of evidence gathered. Once a law firm files, court timelines vary by province. We will keep all registrants informed of major milestones via email.
Do I need to do anything after registering?
No further action is required on your part. Simply keep your email address current so we can reach you with updates. If you have additional evidence or experiences to share later, you can contact us at contact@breeclassaction.org.
